IntroductionWelcome to the online linguistics centre intended for students of language whereever they might be.
English Linguistics in Essen provides an introduction to the essentials of linguistics. It can be used in conjunction with an introductory course in linguistics, any seminar on a particular topic or to jog your memory about language and linguistics when you are preparing for your examinations or writing either an essay or a thesis in linguistics.
There are basically two types of information here:
1) Short summaries of various aspects of language which are displayed when you click on the node of a branch in the tree on the left. These sections are preceded by an open book symbol:
2) Longer texts which can be accessed by clicking nodes which are preceded by the PDF symbol:
The PDF files can be saved to your hard disk and printed at will. They require the Acrobat Reader which – if you do not already have it – can be downloaded from the following address: www.adobe.com
Make sure to check the option Further websites by author (penultimate option in first branch of tree on left). These contain a large amount of useful information covering other aspects of English, e.g. the history of the language and varieties of English world-wide.
